“The Problem of the Rupee: Its Origin and Its Solution”
RBI Chair, Centre for Economic Studies and Policy, ISEC, in association with Dr B R Ambedkar Research Institute, Social Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka, has organised a one-day national seminar on “The Problem of the Rupee: Its Origin and Its Solution” authored by Dr B R Ambedkar, on Tuesday, 23rd September, 2025, at 10 AM, in Mahatma Gandhi Auditorium, ISEC, Bengaluru. Dr B R Ambedkar is well known as constitutional expert but hardly known as he was a renowned economist. Dr Ambedkar obtained Ph D in Economics from Columbia University, New York, USA and DSc from London School of Economics, UK. B.R. Ambedkar had extensively written on several economic topics and his magnum opus include “Administration and Finance of the East India Company” (1915), “The Problem of the Rupee: Its Origin and Its Solution” (1923),
“The Evolution of Provincial Finance in British India” (1925) and “Small Holdings in India and Their Remedies” (1918) to mention a few. Dr Ambedkar’s writings had several impacts on the Indian economy. He was a staunch critique of the British monetary standard, compelled the British for the price stability over exchange rate stability, and advocated land reforms for increasing agricultural productivity, pressed for the industrialization for economic development, and supported for the establishment of a central bank in India. Dr Ambedkar’s economic thoughts continue to influence the economic policies in India particularly to realise social and economic equality and establishment of just society.
This seminar is supported by the Social Welfare Department, Government of Karnataka and the purpose of the seminar is to commemorate centenary year of publication “The Problem of the Rupee: Its Origin and Its Solution” and also to disseminate Dr B R Ambedkar’s Economic ideas and thoughts among the young college students. It is expected that around 400 students will take part in the seminar.
