Training Workshop on

Demographic Computations: Multistate Population Projection
at
ISEC, Bangalore

November 9-13, 2010

ISEC/IIASA/TIFAC collaborative programme is pleased to announce the five day training workshop on “Demographic Computation: Multistate Population Projection” from November 9-13, 2010 at ISEC, Bangalore. The training workshop aims to strengthen the basic analytic skills and help gain knowledge of multistate demography and Excel tools for demographic analysis. The five day training includes lectures, practical sessions and assignments.

About the programme

Multistate population projection was pioneered in the 1970s mainly for regional population projections. It was advanced by developing software and applying the methodology in various fields at IIASA by leading demographers, such as Andrei Rogers, Nathan Keyfitz, and Wolfgang Lutz. This tool is widely used at IIASA and throughout the world to deal with population disaggregated by multiple characteristics other than the classical attributes of population, age and sex. Recently, demographers at IIASA produced multistate population projections by age, sex, and educational attainment for 120 countries of the world. This training workshop will be led by experienced researchers and will cover methodology for multistate population projection along with hands-on training.

In the course, the basic concept of multistate demography will be introduced and discussed. Participants will individually build a multistate population projection model by age, sex, and educational attainment for a state of India using Excel and Visual Basics. Excel is a simple, but powerful computer software that is widely used by demographers. However, most people are not aware of its various useful and time-saving functions and tools. While preparing the model, various issues related to fertility, mortality, migration, and educational attainment will be dealt with one by one.

The course will be conducted interactively with active involvement of participants in terms of discussion focusing on two important aspects of population projections by level of education. The first focus will be on translation of investments in education (e.g., for changes in enrolment) into levels of education in the working-age population. At the same time, we will examine the momentum of education growth regarding the time needed for improvements to spread throughout the entire working-age population. The second focus will be on the possible effect of education on reducing fertility and increasing survival. In most settings, fertility and mortality decrease as the level of education increases both at the individual and aggregate levels.

Course Content

  • Introduction to multistate population projection methodology using IIASA’s PDE (Population-Development-Environment) projection software

  • Demonstration of and training in the use of Excel and Visual Basics for Application (VBA) as tools for developing multistate population projection models

  • Application of the multistate model to project the population of several states in India by age, sex, and educational attainment

Targeted participants

The training workshop is intended for researchers (Assistant or Associate Professor levels), technocrats in the government as well as Ph.D. students in fields related to population studies, who wish to strengthen their basic analytic skills and gain knowledge of multistate demography and Excel tools for demographic analysis.

Workshop Trainers

  • Dr. Samir K.C., Researcher at the World Population Program at IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis), Laxenburg, Austria (www.iiasa.ac.at)

  • Dr. Anne Goujon, Researcher at the World Population Program at IIASA (International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis), Laxenburg, Austria (www.iiasa.ac.at), and Vienna Institute of Demography, Vienna (www.oeaw.ac.at/vid)
