Introduction
Qualitative research
in demography has been gaining increasing prominence in recent years in
terms of articles in international journals and papers in conferences.
The acceptance of qualitative research within a primarily quantitative
discipline like Demography has been gradual. The need to understand the
context behind decision-making has led qualitative methods to gain
prominence in recent years. The work of Australian demographer,
Caldwell, is first of this kind to combine anthropological and
demographic methods. In the Indian context though demographers are aware
of qualitative methods of data gathering and training,
the know-how of applying
rigorous steps and methods for data analysis is missing. This workshop
is first of its kind to fill this gap in knowledge.
About the
Programme
The workshop will discuss the Qualitative
Research Cycle and its various components. Participants will be asked to
formulate research questions and reflect on the relevance of these
questions to analyse in a qualitative research framework. The
participants will refresh their skills on data collection in the form
in-depth interviews and focus group discussions including designing of
research instruments such as in-depth interview guides and focus group
guides. They will further conduct mock interviews or focus group
discussions and reflect on the processes of data collection
(Ethnographic cycle). The major part of the programme will be devoted to
learning data management, coding and analysis. Participants will learn
coding and analysis both manually and with the use of qualitative data
analysis packages (Analytic cycle). Participants will be taught
different ways to present qualitative data to diverse
audiences.
Objective
The objective of
the training is to introduce the Qualitative Research Cycle framework
for conducting qualitative research and to refresh the knowledge and
conduct of qualitative methods and data management. The emphasis of the
course will be on the use of qualitative data analysis and use of
qualitative data analysis software like MaxQDA.

Prospective applicants
The training
workshop is intended for researchers (Assistant or Associate Professor
levels), technocrats in the government as well as Ph.D. students,
who wish to
strengthen their knowledge of qualitative methods and learn various
steps in qualitative data analysis both manually and with the use of
software packages. Participants are expected to attend all the 5-days
including lectures, practical sessions and assignments.
We encourage applicants to bring their
own qualitative data to the workshop (if they have). Data in the form of
transcripts of in-depth interviews and focus group discussions may be
brought to the workshop. If participants intend to do so, please mention
this in your application form.
