International Union for the Scientific Study of Population has
formed a new scientific panel on “New Challenges
in Population and Development” for the period 2010-13. Prof.
Eduardo Rio-Neto from Brazil is the chair of the panel and Professor K S
James from India, Professors Alberto Palloni from USA, Qiang Ren from
China, Bernardo Lanza from Brazil are the other members.
The Scientific Panel’s main
objective is to organize high level meetings of population scientists and
policy makers to review research on the relationship between population
and development and ensure population issues are sufficiently taken into
account by policy makers.
The two lines of activities
and meetings proposed in the panel are:
-
The meaning of population
and development nowadays. A review of the traditional debate on
population and per-capita income growth with new approaches on human
development, integration of the rights perspective stemming from the UN
Conference Cycle with economic development, integration of state social
policies with development.
-
Topics that were not
considered on ICPD- Cairo or that present a different nature nowadays
compared with 1995, for instance, aging, international migration,
fertility (including below replacement in developing countries), gender,
environment and climate changes.
