  • Anamitra Saha Prize  for a research paper entitled “technical efficiency of Major food and CashCrops in Karnataka (India)” published in the April – June 2007, issue of Indian Journal of Agricultural Economics was adjudged the best among the papers published in the IJAE in 2007.

  • Recipient of Junior Fellowship of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), New Delhi, India during my B.Sc. studies for 4 years.

  • Awarded Merit Scholarship for two years during my M.Sc. studies by the University.

Research / Training Experience:

  • Worked as Professor of Economics & Trade with the Indian Institute of Plantation Management (IIPM, Autonomous Institute promoted by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India), Bangalore from July 2006 to July 2008 (on 2 years Deputation from ISEC).

  • I worked for 12 years (from Feb 1976 to Jan 1988) with the Resource Management Program (Economics Unit) of the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), Patancheru, Andhra Pradesh, India.

  • Joined Agricultural Development and Rural Transformation Centre (ADRT) of the Institute for Social and Economic change (ISEC), Bangalore, as a Associate Professor in October 1992 and Working till date.

  • Worked as a Registrar I/c (administrative head) of the Institute for social and Economic Change for a few months.

  • Teaching Post graduate (Ph. D.) students at the institute (Cost benefit analysis, production economics, food security, mathematical programming, etc)

  • Coordinated Research Methodology and Refresher courses sponsored by the Indian council for Social Science Research and University Grants Commission for college and University teachers.

  • Coordinated a training program for officials (joint directors, deputy directors, etc) from department of agriculture on “ Planning and Evaluation of agricultural projects”. 

  • Coordinated training programs for District Planning officials and other personnel of the planning department at the district level, Agriculture and line departments for adopting the concept of Agro-climatic Regional Planning.  

  • Coordinated 13 Short Term Executive Training Programmes for managers of tea gardens at North Bengal and North East India (Assam) and three programmes for small Tea growers in Assam and North Bengal.

  • Coordinated one Short Term Executive Training Programmes for Scientist from Coffee Board and 5 OUT-REACH programmes for coffee growers in Karnataka, Nagaland, Mizoram and Assam.

  • Coordinated a training programme for the senior officials from the department of agriculture, government of Maharashtra about preparing the  Comprehensive District Agriculture Plans as per the guidelines of Planning Commission, Govt. of India.

  • Member of the Board of Examinations for the University of Agricultural Sciences, Bangalore and Mysore University, Mysore.

  • Regular reviewer of research papers sent for publication to the Indian Journal of Agricultural Economics, Bombay

  • Reviewer for the research papers published in the Australian Journal of Agricultural and Resource Economics.

Consultancy Assignments:

  • Worked with the Agricultural Finance Corporation, Bangalore (India) as a consultant from March, 1991 to March, 1992 for a World Bank / Government of Karnataka funded project on "Comprehensive Agricultural Development in Karnataka"

  • I also got an opportunity to work as a consultant for a Sub‑committees constituted by the Government of Karnataka on "Stagnation of Agricultural Productivity in Karnataka during 1980s".

  • Worked as consultant for Environmental and Social Assessment of World Bank funded project on Rehabilitation of Tank Systems through Community Participation in Karnataka (India).

  • Consultant for Indian Plywood Industries Research & Training Institute, Bangalore for a project on “Techno-commercial feasibility of alternative utilization of bamboo in Orissa State”, Report submitted to the Govt. Orissa.

  • Worked as a consultant for World Bank study on “Variability in farm income for a Crop Insurance Study in Karnataka”

  • Community participation in Natural Resource Management : A case study of watershed development programmes in Karnataka for OUTEACH- PAARC, Bangalore

  • I was a member of an Expert Committee constituted by Karnataka Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Bangalore for preparing An action plan for their rural development project.

  • Consultancy assignment from The World Bank for auditing household data collected by a NGO from Zimbabwe.

Major Projects at ICRISAT

  • I was associated with the Village Level Studies (VLS) Project of the Economics/Resource Management Program of ICRISAT

  • My job responsibilities included supervision of data collection, auditing and analysis of socioeconomic data from VLS project.

  • I was in-charge for implementing micro-watershed project and conducted farming system experiments to study Feasibility of Double Cropping on Verisols in Rain-fed areas of SAT India.

  • Participated in number of ad-hock surveys and studies conducted in the economics /Resource Management program of ICRISAT.

Assignments / teaching at the Indian Institute of Plantation Management (IIPM)

  • I taught Managerial/ Enterprise Economics; Research Methodology and Quantitative Techniques; and Agribusiness Management courses to the students studying for Post Graduate Diploma in Agribusiness Management.

  • Coordinated more than two dozen Short Term Executive Programmes (STEP) / REACH-OUT programmes for stakeholders from commodity Boards i.e., Tea Board, Coffee Board, and Rubber Board on WTO issues: AOA, TBT/SPS and IPR.

  • Completed two research projects to Identify HRM and Training needs of stakeholders of Coffee and Rubber sector in India for Coffee and tea board, respectively.
