Inequalities in Access to Health Care in Brazil and India:
Closing the Gap for the Poorest-poor
Facilitate internationally relevant cross-country
studies, and strengthen research
partnerships and networking of social scientists from Brazil, India and the
UK;
Analyse large-scale national survey data to address
policy-oriented research problems
in the area related to social inequalities and population health;
Share research experiences and build capacity in
quantitative methods of health and
demographic data from household surveys;
Produce joint academic research outputs (working papers,
publication in peerreviewed
international journals) and disseminate findings at international
conferences;
Identify priority research areas and strengthen the
research consortium by developing
joint research proposals.

The broader objective of
this study is to understand the methodological and substantive issues
related to social inequalities and access to health care in Brazil and
India, with a focus on the poorest-poor. It also aims to develop a
trilateral research network and strengthen research capacity engaging
demographers, social statisticians and economists from Brazil, India and the
UK to undertake a quantitative investigation of the extent of inequalities
in access to health care and their determinants and the changes over time.
The study is part of the ESRC Pathfinder Project on 'Inequalities in Access
to Health Care in Brazil and India: Closing the Gap for the Poorest poor'
funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), UK. It brings
together a trilateral team of interdisciplinary academic researchers from
the Indian, Brazilian, and British institutions.
